We are right in the middle of holiday season with many of us ready to set off on our holidays over the next few weeks. The weather has been so good to us this year, long hot sunny days and balmy nights. Do we need any other excuses to get out there and enjoy all that is on offer around Ireland? Here are some great ideas on things to do, see and experience over the next few weeks.
If music and festivals is your thing, what about taking in one of the following:-
Indiependence 2018 3rd to 5th August 2018
Indiependence has grown into one of Ireland’s biggest and most loved events, drawing international acts to play alongside the best names in Irish music. Mitchelstown will be rocking for the weekend. This is a very family friendly event with Sunday being a big family day. Why not make a weekend of it at one of the many caravan & camping sites in Cork or Tipperary and take in the festival.
Dublin Horse Show 8 – 12th August
Over 1600 horses and ponies, superb show jumpers from all over the world, as well as style, fun, food and glamour will be at the Stena Line Dublin Horse Show. You don’t have to be big into horses to enjoy this event as there will be plenty of sideshows taking place at the same time. Stay at one of the many caravan & camping sites in Wicklow, Wexford or Dublin itself and take the Dart or Train into Dublin city centre.
Fleadh Cheoil na Eireann Co. Louth 12th – 19th August
Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is the biggest traditional Irish music festival on the planet, a week-long jamboree of music, song and dance, not to mention late nights and family fun! This year’s Fleadh takes place in Drogheda, Co. Louth and promises to be a week of great entertainment. Why not drop by to listen to some great music. Pitch up your tent or caravan in one of the sites in Louth or Down and take the short drive to Drogheda.
Outdoor activities
The expansion of some great cycling and walking routes over the past few years has been welcomed in Ireland. You can talk a leisurely stroll or cycle or race to the finish line, whatever takes your fancy. Cycle the Great Western Greenway and experience 42km of track on the off-road walking and cycling trail in the West of Ireland. There are a number of great caravan & camping sites in Mayo, some along the route of the Greenway. The 45km trail on the Waterford Greenway runs from Dungarvan to Waterford along the Old Railway line. Book into one of the great sites in Waterford, spend a few days there and experience this fantastic amenity. Blueways Ireland are a network of multi-activity recreational trails, based on or alongside idyllic lakes, canals and rivers in Ireland. They provide scenic routes into the heart of rural Ireland by canoe, bike or on foot. Caravan Parks are located amongst many of the trails and routes and would be a perfect base for you to explore the Blueways.
Why not go underground and visit one of Ireland’s many spectacular caves – Ailwee Cave and Doolin Caves in Clare, Dunmore Cave in Kilkenny, Mitchelstown Caves in Co. Tipperary or Marble Arch Caves in Fermanagh. All offer spectacular views of stalactites and stalagmites and would be a great family day out.
Take in the spectacular coastal counties
You could also take a trip to one of the many Islands off the coast of Ireland. Visit Ireland’s Secret Island of Garnish where exotic plants flourish and spot the seals on Seal Island. West Cork has so much to offer and great places to stay. Take a day trip to the Aran Islands “One of the world’s top island destinations”, according to Lonely Planet. A visit to the Causeway Coast, Antrim must take in a trip to Rathlin Island, situated off the north east coast of Ireland, and is the only inhabited offshore island in Northern Ireland.
The Great Lighthouses of Ireland features twelve lighthouses in breath-taking coastal locations and offers visitors the chance to visit a lighthouse, to find out about their history, to appreciate the spectacular natural world around them, to discover the technology at work in lighthouses today and to meet the people who are passionate about these unique places. The 12 locations run from Fanad Head, Donegal to Valentia Island in Kerry and from Rathlin West in Antrim to Hook Head, Wexford. Staying at one of the many caravan & camping parks around the country you will always find one of these great lighthouses within easy reach.
